Graduate Certificate in Geothermal Energy (GCGE)

 

The Graduate Certificate in Geothermal Energy (GCGE) is a 15-credit interdisciplinary program designed for working professionals in the energy industry, including administrators, engineers, and business entrepreneurs. This program is offered in hybrid format, allowing for both online and in-person instruction. The certificate can be completed in as short as 12 months.

Admission Requirements

To apply for the Geothermal Energy Certificate, applicants must submit the following documents:

  • Two Letters of Recommendation
  • Official Transcripts
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)

The application deadline is open until the first week after the start of the fall semester at New Mexico Tech.


Certificate Requirements

To earn the Geothermal Energy Certificate, students must complete four required courses from their chosen track and one elective course, for a total of 15 credits.

Track 1 - Ground Source Heat Pumps / Direct Use / Thermal Storage

  1. MENG 5075 – Advanced Engineering Mathematics (3 credits)
  2. MENG 5078 – Advanced Thermodynamics (3 credits)
  3. MENG 5079 – Advanced Heat Transfer (3 credits)
  4. HYDR 5010 – Groundwater Hydrology (3 credits)

Track 2 - Hydrothermal / Engineered Geothermal Systems

  1. PETR 5046 – Advanced Formation Evaluation (3 credits) (Fall Semester)
  2. PETR 5065 – Completion for Geothermal Wells (3 credits) (Spring Semester)
  3. PETR 5066 – Geothermal Reservoir Simulation (3 credits) (Spring Semester)
  4. PETR 5067 – Thermal Recovery (3 credits) (Spring Semester)

Elective Course Options (Select One to Meet the 15-credit Requirement)

  • HYDR 5007 – Hydrogeochemistry (3 credits)
  • HYDR 5016 – Geofluids (3 credits)
